In 2012 the government of Kenya through it’s energy regulatory body, ERC, came up with energy regulations that would help the country transition into a greener future through solar PV, solar water heating and energy audits in various premises.
Kenya has various power energy sources:- solar energy, hydro energy, wind energy, Geothermal energy, biomas and biogas. The country has huge solar potential, with daily insolation levels of 4-6kwh/m2 which can power homes all year round and minimize reliance on the grid. Some of the barriers affecting the exploitation of solar energy resource include high initial capital costs, low awareness of the potential opportunities and economic benefits offered by solar technologies, and a lack of adherence to system standards by suppliers.
As reported by world bank, electricity access in Kenya is still below 50% which makes solar more viable given it’s nature to be easily run off-grid, much shorter payback periods, low maintenance costs and ability to be compounded into easy-to-use pay-as-you-go systems that even the poor consumers can afford. Companies like SOLARVED are coming up with solutions that caters for the whole customer spectrum, from systems that enable customers to be off-grid and have the KPLC power as the back-up to simple affordable systems for the low-end market. With the current trends in the market where there is a fast adoption of solar, companies will continue coming up with innovative solutions that solves the power problem in full consideration of the environment including what exactly happens to the batteries and other parts after end of their service. This calls for proper government policies and a coordinated effort between the government and the private sector.
One of the initiative by the government of Kenya is to have solar water heaters for properties that use more than 100 litres of hot water as gazetted by ERC:
“Installation and use of solar water heating systems.
3. (1) All premises within the jurisdiction of a local authority with hot water requirements of a capacity exceeding one hundred litres per day shall install and use solar heating systems.
(2) Within a period of five years from the date of coming into force of these Regulations, all existing premises with hot water requirements of a capacity exceeding one hundred litres per day shall install and use solar heating systems.
(3) A person who contravenes the provisions of this regulation commits an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding one million shillings, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, or to both.”
This means that for all properties in Kenya that use over 100 litres of hot water per day – average 3members family household – they should have solar water heaters. Otherwise they would not get building approvals from the local authorities and they would be denied connection to the national grid. The compliance is easy and affordable. With systems ranging from as low as Kshs. 45,000 for a 100Litres system at SOLARVED and installation taking 1-2 days for a normal household,it would mean that the switch to solar is much much simpler now. Even with an existing electric boiler/geyser you can get switched to solar water heaters in a very short time and start saving right away. This is the catch. For an average household, you can save over 3 tons of carbon per year which is like planting over 100 trees in a year. Only by such a simple installation. It’s amazing.
Many people ask – ‘Can it really heat water?’
The heat pipe tube water heating technology has heated water to temperatures of over 100C on stagnation. Even with temperatures below 8C, these systems have heat water to good temperatures in countries like China and Europe. When there is an occasion and the water requirement is so high, the electric element kicks in and saves the day. You don’t even have to do anything, all this is programmed into the system and you just have to press a button when you want to have even more hotter water.
With our systems you can save up to 100% on water heating bills and even better have a hot bath when there is no power from KPLC.
We at SOLARVED supply and install solar water heaters for all premises and also help with the designs from the project conception to actualization & ensure that the saving targets are met, long after the systems are in place and working.
We provide solutions to:- Apartments, hotels, schools, hospitals, swimming pool solar heating, homes…
